My first encounter with the Harley-Davidson X350 was in an unusual setting—the tunnels of Allianz Stadium. Navigating polished concrete at speeds that would make safety personnel cringe wasn’t the ideal way to test this bike, but even in those circumstances, the X350 intrigued me. Its neo-flat-track design and lightweight frame made it feel agile and playful.

This isn’t a bike for those seeking massive horsepower. Instead, it’s a machine that invites you to ring out every bit of its 36 horsepower and 31Nm of torque. At just 180kg, the X350 is light enough to make every twist of the throttle exhilarating, especially for younger riders or those new to Harley-Davidson.

A Modern Harley for the Next Generation

Gone are the days when Harley-Davidson’s entry-level models like the Street 500 left riders unimpressed. The X350 is a complete departure, offering a rideable, corner-capable machine with the iconic Harley-Davidson badge. For learners (LAMs) or riders looking for a fun second bike, it’s a revelation.

Of course, there’s the unavoidable controversy over its origin. Manufactured in China by Zhejiang Qianjiang Motorcycle Group, the X350 shares DNA with the Benelli range. While some purists balk at this, the reality is that global manufacturing has made Chinese-made products an integral part of modern industry. The X350’s build quality and performance should dispel any lingering doubts.

On the Road: From City Traffic to Twisting Highways

Taking the X350 out of Sydney traffic and onto the iconic Putty Road was where the bike truly came alive. This stretch of road, free from weekday crowds and overzealous law enforcement, offered the perfect proving ground.

The first thing I noticed was the firm seat, especially at the edges. It’s manageable for most riders but might challenge those with less endurance. The bike’s short first gear means you’ll quickly find yourself shifting into second from a standstill, but once you’re there, it pulls cleanly and smoothly.

At speeds between 80 and 120 km/h, the X350 feels at home. Overtaking requires planning, but the bike’s light weight and responsive handling make it engaging rather than frustrating. Push past 120, though, and the suspension begins to show its limitations. Holding it pinned at an indicated 147 km/h is undeniably thrilling, but the bike’s hardware struggles to keep pace with the adrenaline.

Corners, Tyres, and Silliness

Cornering on the X350 revealed its Achilles’ heel—the Maxxis tyres. While they may be durable, they lack the stickiness needed for spirited riding. Even after prolonged runs on a hot day, the tyres felt more like linoleum than grippy rubber, limiting confidence in tight corners. For those planning to ride this bike aggressively, swapping to a stickier set of tyres is a must.

Despite this, the X350 proved to be enormous fun. Its manageable power, lightweight design, and simplicity encouraged me to push its limits, evoking the carefree thrill of being a 17-year-old motorcyclist again.
